June 21 has been celebrated as World Music Day for many years. History has it that American musician Joel Cohen proposed this idea of celebrating the beginning of summer solstice through music and since then, the entire world celebrates World Music day on June 21. Another theory related to this day is that since June 21, 1982, France has been celebrating Fete de la Musique as their Music Day. The then French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, carried the idea forward and the day came to be known as World Music Day.
Over 32 countries celebrate this day in their own way. Musicians organise concerts in parks, train stations, museums and all the other public places. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan
Ustad Ali Akbar Khan is known for popularising Indian classical music in the West. One of the greatest musicians in the North Indian music, Ali Akbar could play several other music instruments but decided to concentrate only on Sarod. He gave his first public appearance when he was only 13 years-old and has been respected since his first concert. The late musician was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 1989.

Hariprasad Chaurasia
Chaurasia is an Indian flutist. His father wanted him to be a wrestler but he learnt music instead. He learning vocal music from Pandit Rajaram when he was 15 years-old but switched to flute. He then learnt Flute from Pandit Bholanath of Varanasi. Chaurasia has given music in the Bollywood movies like Chandni, Silsila and Lamhe. He has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan for his contribution to the world of music.
Bismillah Khan
Bismillah Khan is well-known as the legendery Shehnai player. He is also well-known to bring it at the centre of Indian classical music. One of the most-celebrated classical musicians, Bismillah Khan was trained under his uncle. He has also been credited with bringing Shehnai from playing in the weddings to the centre stage of classical genre. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna. He was also awarded with the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri.
