Answer:

Because the western part went to the Dominion of India (and was named West Bengal), while the eastern part went to the Dominion of Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan in 1956). ... In 1950 the Princely State of Cooch Behar merged with West Bengal.

Answer:

East Pakistan then came to be known as Bangladesh. Thus, there became two Bangla speaking regions-- One, Bengal in India and other, the whole of Bangladesh. Now, since Bengal in India is west to that of Bangladesh,

Bangladesh came to be known as East Bengal and Bengal ( in India) came to be known as West Bengal.
