before independence when pakistan and bangladesh were part of india during that time Bangladesh and bengal were one state but after some time partition was done and bangladesh was given name as east bengal and other part as west bengal.after the partition of india and pakistan Bangladesh was known as east pakistan and after some time finally got the name bangladesh but this other part didn't change its name and hence west bengal being in east side of india is known as west.

Bengal is located in the border of bangladesh which is in the eastern side of bengal. Before british came in India bangladesh was a part of bengal . Bangladesh was occupied by the muslims and bengal was occupied by hindus . So bengal was known as west bengal and bangladesh was known as east bengal .
