Western influences have changed many aspects of multiple cultures all over the world, some changes have been for the better, while some for the worse. These include technology and its relationship with children, the status of women, political, social freedoms, as well as popular culture.

  • Children of today are much more exposed to new technology and devices than the previous generations. They are well versed in how to navigate a tablet device before uttering a single word. This has poor health implications and can be detrimental to their mental state. It is also a safety issue
  • The status of women has certainly improved due to western influences. Many countries, including India, consider women to be lesser than men while rationalizing it by comparing them to god. This has gone a slow and steady change as education and awareness, along with western ideas of freedom of expression have found their way
  • Political freedoms have been curtailed with the advent of social media; where political opinion has been heavily policed. Western politics has shaped and changed the landscape completely, this is cause for concern as their system of governance cannot be replicated in our country
  • Popular culture is full of western media; be it movies, comic books, literature, and music. It must be stated that this is not because of a lack of talent or absence of indigenous stories but is because of a lack of willingness to put resources in producing our own stories
