The history of Western painting signifies a continuous, although disrupted, tradition from olden times until the present time. Until the mid 19th century it was mainly concerned with classical and representational modes of production, after which time more abstract, conceptual, and modern forms gained favour.

Their art was a dynamic combination of methods, materials, subjects, and concepts which continue to challenge borders well under way in the twentieth century) after the profound exploration and development of the inventions of the Renaissance.
