The very thought among the common man that they were living the lives of second-class citizens in their own country, brought out nationalism in them. Progressive leaders and thinkers helped to channel this collective fervour and bring it out as a nationalist movement.
The West had outspoken thinkers and authors, whose works helped to a certain extent, in shaping the ideals of thinkers and leaders of India. However, this would have played only a minor role, in bringing out Indian nationalism.
