Answer:

Britishers introduced English education in India which paved the ideas of people on scientific lines. They started educating the people through their Christian missionaries. The middle class were educated through these missionaries. The Britishers actually introduced this education for employing the Indians in small jobs like clerks or any other officials.

But the educated middle class of India were inspired by the writings of John Locke, Adam Smith, J.S. Mill, Rosseau etc. The people of India were interested in the core political values like liberty, equality, fraternity and justice. But these things were not shown by the Britishers. Hence, the educated middle class raised questions on the dual policy of the Britishers. These educated people started movements against the Britishers.

Thus, Western thoughts and ideas were responsible for developing and arousing the feelings of the nationalism among Indians in British Rule.

The Indians learned the western thoughts and ideas through modern English and western education.

The western ideas widened and deepened the political thinking of the people.

The Indians came to know about the western ideas of liberty, equality, democracy, independence and patriotism and wanted the same in India.

They were influenced by the self-determination and liberalism propounded by the western scholars.

The people began to fight for these liberal and democratic principles and self-determination and thus created a feeling of nationalism among them.

Hence we can say that “Western thoughts and ideas were responsible for developing and arousing the feelings of nationalism among Indians in British Rule”
