it means that one carbon can join many other carbon atom to itself and also other atoms like oxygen and hydrogen.... also carbon have a tetra valency so as the versatile nature suggest.....

carbon can form a large number of compounds due to catenation.
catenation:- the self linking ability of carbon atoms to form long chains , branches and rings to form covalent bonds is called catenation.
