Water is very important for the growth of the plants but excessive irrigation of fields leads to water logging of soil. Too much water harmful for crop production as discussed under: This is due to reason of excess water affect soil aeration and hence plants roots do not grow properly.

when excessive irrigation is done , the nutrients and minerals of the soil are being washed away with the excess water . this also makes the soil loose which is a disadvantage for the plant as the roots also become loose causing the plan to flow with the water or die
