Answer:

In this group, the hydrogen acts as the hydride ion (\(H^-\)). They bond with more electropositive metal atoms. Ionic hydrides are usually binary compounds (i.e., only two elements in the compound) and are also insoluble in solutions. Ionic hydrides combine vigorously with water to produce hydrogen gas.

"Answer:

Binary compounds of hydrogen are the hydrides that other compounds form with hydrogen.

i) Ionic Hydrides: Formed by alkali metals of s-block .

  •      NaH,CaH2,MgH2 etc. are Ionic Hydrides.

(except LiH is a covalent hydride because Li has small size)

ii) Covalent Hydride : p-block compounds form Hydrides with hydrogen.

       B2H6, CH4 , NH3 , HCl

  • Hydrides formed with halogens form acids with hydrogen which are                corrosive in nature.
