What were those words, & what was their effect on Franz?

when Mr hamel has announced that it was there last French lesson as the order from Berlin had come that in the schools of alsace and Laurance German would be teached these words were thunderclap to little franz.

suddenly he has started liking his cranky teacher m hamel and books seem to be his old friend and now he wanted to learn french.

The words were that now no more French would be taught. It was a shocking and unexpected for Franz. He realised of not taking his French lessons faithfully and was regretting from quick of his heart.
