After the world war II there was the defeat of ottoman Turkey. There was a rumor that there was a peace treaty going to be imposed on the Ottoman empire or the Khalifa. This  frightened the Khalifa. Mahatma Gandhi along with others, started the Khalifat agitation in 1919 to bring all the HINDUS and MUSLIMS under a unified umbrella.
