Sitwell's first work of fiction, Triple Fugue, was distributed in 1924, and visits to Italy and Germany delivered Discursions on Travel, Art and Life (1925).

His first novel, Before the Bombardment (1926), set in an out-of-season inn, was very much looked into – Ralph Straus composing for Bystander magazine called it 'an about immaculate bit of mocking composition', and Beverley Nichols commended 'the lavishness of its magnificence and mind'.
