The following were the main causes that made it possible for the British to colonize India:

1. The British were drawn towards the rich resources of India such as spices, gold, silk etc and wanted to become a part of the trading activities that had been carried on by the Portuguese.

2. They craved to trade, use and loot the resources of India.

3. Weak national political conditions that had suffered after Aurangzeb's death aided British control over India.

4. Political volatility in the country, vulnerable central authority, the war of succession between Hyderabad and Carnatic made it feasible for the colonial government to extend its federal authority.

5. The position of India in Asia, combining  South East Asia and Central Asia presented the British government with a gainful possibility of establishing authority in the country and the whole of Asia.
