Helen Keller was born on 27th June 1880 in Alabama. Her father was a colonial governor of Virginia and her mother’s side was related to quite a few prominent families of New England. Her father had been a Captain in the Confederate Army, and post war he edited a local newspaper called the North Alabamian. Her family lost a considerable amount of wealth during the Civil War. Helen mentions that her father’s side of family traces their origin to a Swiss, Casper Keller and according to the reports, Helen’s Swiss ancestors had been the first teacher of deaf people in Zurich.

The family on Helen's father's side descended from Caspar Keller, a native of Switzerland who had settled in Maryland. One of her Swiss ancestors was the first teacher of the deaf in Zurich and had written on a book on the subject of their education. It was a strange occurrence considering the fact that Helen was to become deaf and blind. Her grandfather, Caspar Keller's son had grabbed large tracts of land in Alabama and settled there. Helen was told that once a year he went from Tuscumbia to Philadelphia on horseback to purchase supplies for the plantation. Her aunt had in her possession many letters of his to his family which gave charming and detailed accounts of these trips. Her grandmother Keller was a daughter of one of Lafayette's aides, Alexander Spotswood, an early Colonial Governor of Virginia. She was also second cousin to Robert E.Lee. Her father Arthur H Keller was a captain in the confederate army and her mother Kate Adams was his second wife, many years younger than him. Her grandfather Benjamin Adams had married Susanna E. Goodhue, and lived in Newbury, Massachusetts, for many years. Their son, Charles Adams, was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and moved to Helena, Arkansas. When the Civil War broke out, he fought on the side of the South and became a brigadier-general. He and Lucy Helen Everett, who belonged to the same family of Everetts as Edward Everett and Dr Edward Everett Hale were married. Once the war was over, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
