Mrs Bennet belonged to a trading family, and was thus not a part of the established gentry, to which the likes of Mr Darcy belonged. The commercial class was not held in high esteem in Austen’s time, as you might have guessed from the snide remarks made by Miss Bingley and Mrs Hurst about the “connections” of Eliza Bennet. While this is not the direct cause of Eliza’s embarrassment, it is important to keep this context in mind. Mrs Bennet was not very skilled at the social customs and decorum expected of members of the gentry. She loudly expressed her dislike of Mr Darcy over dinner, and showed herself ignorant of London society when she said that their neighborhood was as large as any, and they dined with “four-and-twenty” families (I think that’s the exact number). Eliza Bennet is embarrassed by this ill-breeding of her mother, who time and again fails to comply with the sort of behavior expected of a gentlewoman.
