Sugar cane is a Water intensive crop. Lot of water resources are wasted for this crop. In the world, most sugar production is from sweet potato and potato.

If you stop production of Sugar cane and change to sweet Potato, which is an underground dry crop, water that is saved will serve drinking water, and water for other food crops. It will also save us from constant fights for water.

But Sugar co-operatives are milking cows in the hands of the politicians, and they will never allow it. You remove, Sugar Cane, then the JDS in KRTNATAKA, NCP in MAHARASHTRA and Ajit singh’s party in UP , will simply vanish. It will also affect SAD.

South India, which has very few perennial rivers has few advantages over gangetic plain states in growing sugar cane, The fight for waters of Cauvery is an example
