Freedom movement and making of constitution a legacy of Congress: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia asserted that "the history of freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and making of the Constitution were inseparable from the legacy of Congress."

NEW DELHI: Using the Lok Sabha debate on the Constitution to launch an attack on the BJP and the Modi government, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said that it was a joke, "those who had played no role" in the framing of the Constitution were "now trying to swear by it and lay claim to its legacy".

Asserting "the history of freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and making of the Constitution were inseparable from the legacy of the Congress party", Gandhi paid glowing tributes to Ambedkar, underlining the "equally big contributions of Nehru, Sardar Patel, Rajendra Prasad and Maulana Azad in framing the Constitution". "People who never had faith in the Constitution, nor had participated in its drafting, are now swearing by it and are laying claim to it. There cannot be a bigger joke than this," Gandhi said, during which she paused and smiled frequently to ward off protest from NDA benches.

"Ambedkarji had observed that howsoever good a Constitution may be, if those implementing it were bad people, then the ultimate effect would only be bad," she said, before adding: "Whatever being witnessed over the past few months were against the principles of the Constitution."

She said: "Congress party spotted the unique talent and capability of Ambedkar who had returned from abroad after higher studies… Ambedkarji himself once said "I was surprised when I was chosen as the chairman. There were more learned and better people than me in the committee. It was the discipline of the Congress party that enabled the drafting committee to give full information about every Act in the Constitution"." When BJP members tried to laugh at it, Gandhi quipped with a smile, "kyon? yeh itihaas hai, fact hai (This is part of history).
