The poem “You Are Old, Father William” by Lewis Carroll is about the understandings of one generation about the another. The poem is structured in the conversational tone between a father and a son. The detail about the father and son builds confusion in the poem. The son's odd inquiries about his father and the father's odd responses are seen in the poem. The theme of the poem lies in the failure of understandings which one generation builds on about the other.  

The funny thing that Father William did in his old age was that he stood on his head. His son found it very strange and asked him not to attempt such things in his age.
