Communalism means the feeling of having the religion being the basis of the nation. Domination of one religion over the other leads to various forms of communalism.

1. Expression of communalism in everyday beliefs.
2. The communal mind tries to seek political dominance of one's own religious community.
3. Political mobilisation on religious lines
4. The ugly violent form of communalism.

Communalism has various forms:

i) Sometimes communalism takes place in the form of stereotypes and prejudices. It is so common that it happens every day and yet we fail to notice it.

ii) Communalism often leads to thinking of political dominance of one's own religious community. For the majority it takes place in the form of majoritarianism and for minority it takes place in the form of a separate state.

iii) Communalism can be spread by political lines. It involves the use of sacred symbols, appeals to vote, demands, promises, etc by the political leaders.

iv) Communalism can take it's ugliest form with riots and massacres. For example: The riots caused in India and Pakistan during the partition.
