Mr Cavendish was a person who could easily be monopolised. Emily Inglethorp, a woman with a dominating personality kept all the hard-earned wealth of Mr Cavendish after his death. When he was a widower, he perhaps was helpless and thus settled to marry Emily. In my idea, Mr Cavendish was foolish to leave his money and fame to Emily and not for John and Lawrence.

Hope this helps!
