Amir Khusrau said that there were many languages in India. Every region had its own language. But Sanskrit did not belong to any region. It was an ancient language. It was the language of the learned. Common people did not know it. He praised Sanskrit and said that it was a pearl among pearls.

The Brahmanas formed the learned class. They occupied the highest place in society. They were the ones who studied Sanskrit.
