The son is really age-obsessed in this poem because he keeps reminding his dad of how old he is. The son tells the father repeatedly that he is old and asks him why he's doing the stuff he's doing now. The father tells his son that he was afraid to do things that were dangerous or frightening when he was young, but now his age doesn't matter to him and it's just a number. In a way, the son is very arrogant because all his father's thoughts are of an age that challenges his actions. Given the fact that the father is elderly, he seems very pleased with the fact that he is getting older and seems angry with his son at the end. In the sense that the son tells the father that he is old, the son questions the father, the father argues back and threatens to kick him down the stairs and shuts the son up, this poem is repeated.
