The Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy is a story of King (Tzar) who wanted to know if He knew always the right time for everything to begin; he knew who the right people were to meet and listen to and who to avoid and above all he would never fail, because he knew always what was the most important thing to do.

Explanation:

  • And having this thought occurred to him, in his kingdom he had it proclaimed that he would give a great reward to anyone, who could show him what the right time was for any action and who would be the most important people and and how he might know what was the most important thing to do.
  • All the answers being different, the king agreed with none of them, and gave the reward to none. But still wishing to find the right answers to his questions, he decided to consult a hermit, widely renowned for his wisdom.
  • The answer that the king got from the hermit were: the hermit told the king If the King had not pitied the Hermit's weakness yesterday, and had not dug these beds for me, but had gone his way, that man (the injured man) would have attacked the king and the king would have regretted of not having stayed with the hermit. So the Hermit said most important time was when the King was digging the beds; and the Hermit was the most important man at that time to the king; and to do good for the hermit was the king's most important business.
  • Afterwards, when the injured had run towards the king and the hermit, the most important time the Hermit said when the king was attending to him, for had not the king bound up his wounds the injured man would have died without having made peace with the king. So then the injured man was the most important man, and what the king did for him was the most important business.
  • The hermit said the king that there is only one time that is important and that is now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power. The most important  person is the one with whom the king is with , for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with anyone else: and the most important business is to do that person good, since  for that reason alone man sent into this life.
