4 types of coals and their characteristics -

1. peat - has low carbon and high moisture content.
2. anthracite - highest rank of coal and had low sulfur and high carbon content.
3. lignite - has high moisture and high sulfur content. 
4. bituminous - it is soft and dense and sometimes has band of dull or bright material in it.

Bituminous: it has 60 to 80% carbon content and is used for smelting of iron in blast furnaces so it is also c/a mettalurgical coal

Lignite: 60 to70% carbon content it is also used for generation of electricity

Peat: 60% carbon content. Decaying of plant in swamps produce peat. It has high moisture content and low heat content
