On the basis of the period of disease , diseases can be classified as acute and chronic diseases .

Acute diseases : The diseases that occur for a short period of time are called acute diseases . These are often easily cureable . For example : malaria , etc. These are often not fatal and cause less damage to the body.

Chronic diseases : The diseases that occur for a long period of time , sometimes for lifetime , are called chronic diseases . These diseases are not easily cureable . For example : Diabetes , thyroid malfunctioning , etc . These may be fatal and cause damage to the body organs .

Diseases may be broadly classified as :

Congenital diseases : These are present since birth and are inheritable . These are often genetic disorders .

Acquired diseases : These are present after birth and are not inheritable . These can be again classified as communicable diseases that can be spread from person to person caused by pathogens and non - communicable diseases that cannot be transferred from person to person .
