Any of a class of organic compounds containing the group −CHO, which yields acids when oxidized and alcohols when reduced. In this way the last portion of the aldehyde is absorbed, and the potash solution gradually assumes an amber colour. Benzoic acid, like the aldehyde, is a natural product which has long been known.
