What are alkalies? explain.

alkalies are water - soluble bases. they are compounds which dissolve in aqueous solution to produce a hydroxyl ions as the only negatively charged ions.

they turn red lithmus blue and produce salt and water when made to react with acid.

they also react with warm ammonium salt to give ammonia gas


eg -

NaOH <=====> Na+ + OH-
KOH <======> K+ + OH-

Alkalis are strong bases and soluble with water . They turns red litmus paper to blue . they are soapy in touch . Strong base like sodium hydroxide(NaOH) can cause severe burns
