Hi !

Hydrocarbons are the compounds which are formed by the combination of carbon and hydrogen.
There are two types of hydrocarbons :-
1) Saturated hydrocarbons ( alkanes)
2) Unsaturated hydrocarbons( alkenes and alkynes)

Saturated hydrocarbons are those , which are bonded by single bond.
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons.
Eg : Methane,Ethane , etc.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons are those , bonded by double or triple bonds.
Those hydrocarbons with double bonds are called - alkenes (Eg: Methene)
Hydrocarbons with triple bond are called alkynes . (eg : Methyne)

Additional information :-

General formula for Alkane ->  C _{n} H _{2n + 2}

No: of carbon atoms = n = 1,2,3, .......

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General formula for alkene -> C _{n} H _{2n }

No: of carbon atoms = n = 2 , 3 , 4 .......
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General formula for alkene -> C _{n} H _{2n - 2 }

No: of carbon atoms = n = 2 , 3 , 4 .......
