Amino acids are a wonder of nature which are essential for life. They were found to be produced first time by the earth's early conditions, like constant volcanic activity, thunderstorms, Heavy rain and high temperature. Miller and Urey were the first to synthesise artificial amino acids.

Coming back to the definition, (Sorry for the brief history) It is a carbon molecule to which, an amino group is attached and a carboxylic acid group is attached on other side, and one variable group.( can be anything , H, CH3, OH, S3H). These combine to form proteins of various structure and functions.

Function of Amino acid-
1) Protein synthesis.
2) Enters sometimes in a process called gluconeogenesis in case of emergency.
3) They maintain the acid base balance due to their Amphoteric behaviour.
4) They help in Blood functions, like clotting (by fibrinogen protein)
5) Helps in Osmoregulation (By albumin protein)
6) Help for the colour of skin (by melanin pigment)
7) Help in Hormonal System that's the Endocrine system.
8) Also help formation of Enzymes (Exocrine system).
9) Help in Immune response.
10) And the most important, help in DNA and RNA synthesis.

Answer:

Functions of Amino Acids:

(i) Besides their principal function as

building blocks for proteins, specific

amino acids are also converted into

different types of biological active

compounds. e.g., tyrosine is converted

into the hormones thyroxine and

adrenaline, as well as the skin pigment

melanin, glycine is involved in the

formation of heme and tryptophan in the

formation of the vitamin nicotinamide as

well as the plants hormone indole-3-

acetic acid.
