Dear Student,

# Amphoteric oxide -

  • An oxide which reacts with both acid and base to produce salt and water is called amphoteric oxide.
  • They show dual behaviour with water.
  • For example, aluminium oxide (Al2O3), zinc oxide (ZnO), lead oxide (PbO2), etc.

# Examples of amphoteric oxides -

(1) Lead oxide (PbO2) -

  • PbO2 + 2HCl --> PbCl2 + H2O
  • PbO2 + 2NaOH --> Na2PbO3 + H2O

(2) Aluminum oxide -

  • Al2O3 + 6HCl --> 2AlCl3 + 3H2O
  • Al2O3 + 2NaOH --> 2NaAlO2 + H2O

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you..
