Amphoteric is derived from the Greek word amphoteroi (ἀμφότεροι) meaning "both".

amphoteric oxides are those which react with both acids and bases to give salt and water/ example: Zno (Zinc oxide)

Zno + Hcl ( ACID) → ZnCl2 + H20

Zno + NaOH (BASE)—--> Na2ZnO2 + H2O
