Anabolism and catabolism. Two types of metabolic reactions take place in the cell: 'building up' (anabolism) and 'breaking down' (catabolism). Anabolic reactions use up energy. They are endergonic. In an anabolic reaction small molecules join to make larger ones.

Anabolic reactions are those which uses one or more items to build up a product(s). Anabolic reactions are forming reactions. That build up a product. Eg- Growth of Bones and muscles.

Catabolic reactions are those which breaks a substance to form one or more products. Catabolic reactions generally means beakdown reactions. They involve breaking down of a substance. Eg- Glycolysis.
