An antibiotic is a chemical substance produced by a living organism which can stop thw growth of some disease producing microorganisms.

Examples of antibiotics are -----
Penicilin, streptomycin, chorotetracycline , erythromycin etc.

Antibiotics are not effective against viruses because bacteria and virus both have different machinery to reproduce and survive.

Antibiotics - This word literally means against living. It is used to kill the or inhibit the growth of pathogens at low concentration level . They are prepared chemicals by microorganisms mainly bacteria and fungi.
example - Penicillin, Streptomycin, etc.

It is not effective against virus because the biological pathways of virus is quite different from others. Virus is intermediate stage of life but others are living . Antibiotics can destroy the cell wall of bacteria but can not destroy envelope of virus because it is very thin so that it can easily be stuck with cell membrane so that Antibiotics can not determine its position in the body easily
