Antonio was in a melancholy mood for no reason and thus his friends, Salarino and salanio are trying to impress him so that he(Antonio) can get rid of his grief .

Antonio's reason for sadness was unknown but he might be in melancholy mood for the following reasons :-

• He may be melancholic by nature.
• He fears losing Bassanio to Portia.
• He has foreboding of some approaching disaster.
• His sadness is a foil to the gaiety of his friends.

Salarino and salanio are talkative like Gratiano. Commenting on Antonio's melancholy, Salanio says that he too would be feeling sad at the time, if his ships were sailing upon the sea.
