An app is a program created for a specific hardware platform . Application program or app is the software designed to perform specific task on devices such as smartphones, tablet computers, ebook readers and so on .


In a newly-purchased mobile device you can see apps such as a web browser, calendar email, music and so on. These apps are pre- installed in a mobile devices . Many other apps that are pre-installed on the device or available on the application store. An application store is also an app created to download other useful applications . Some apps are freely available on the app store while there are a few which have to be purchased .

Unlike applications for PCs ( often called desktop applications ) , mobile apps can be downloaded from the app store . Most devices automatically install the apps after they are downloaded . This create a seamless installation process for the user .

The term 'app' was popularised by Apple . This happened when the company created the 'App store ' in 2008 , a year after the first iPhone was released.

All educational websites, institutes of Higher Learning and even schools have their own app. An app is a software program . Apps allow you to customise a phone to your specific set of requirements . They are generally easy to find and install . Once you start using them, apps become a necessary part of your daily life .
