Answer:

As plants evolved and colonized the surface of Earth they were forced to develop diverse survival strategies. The plants that developed adaptations to survive in arid environments have produced interesting, beautiful, and strange forms of life in the process. Fleshy-leaved succulents, small desert wildflowers, and shrubs and trees with waxy, leathery, or even tiny leaves all thrive in hot, dry environments with little rainfall. These plants use a variety of strategies to conserve water, reduce transpiration, and get the most out of the scant and often seasonal precipitation.

Arid areas are hot and dry. The arid zone includes places where the world's highest temperatures have been recorded, such as Death Valley in the USA. (Polar regions can also be dry, but instead of having a hot climate, they're very, very cold.)

Environments subject to arid climates tend to lack vegetation and are called xeric or desertic. Cacti are typical succulent perennials. Nonsucculent perennials comprise the majority of plants in the arid zone. These are hardy plants, including grasses, woody herbs, shrubs and trees that withstand the stress of the arid zone environment.</p></body></html>
