The asteroids ,more properly known as Minor planets, are small bodies circling the Sun between the paths of Mars and Jupiter-- though a few ,such as Eros, depart from the main swarm and may approach the Earth fairly closely .The largest are Ceres 670 km ( 416 m ) in diameter ; Pallas 450 km ( 280 m ) ; Vesta 385 km ( 239 m ) , the brightest and the only one visible to the naked eye ; and Juno 240 km ( 149 m ).They are thought to have condensed from the primordial cloud of gas and dust from which the solar system was formed .Many of the smaller Asteroids are irregular in shape ,e.g. Eros is elongated 19×6km ( 12×4m ) and rotates in 5 hour 17 minute .A previously unknown Asteroid approached within c.1,200,000km .(750,000m) of Earth in 1976--- close in space distances. They are composed mostly of iron and silicon.

What are asteroids?

Minor planets

# They are small and rocky.

# They revolve around sun.

# They are too small to be called planets.

# So, they are planetoids or minor planets.

# They have been dangerous to Earth before and can cause danger in future too.

# That's why scientists research about them.

# The asteroid belt is between Mars and Jupiter.

Hope it helps...
