Astral rays are microtubules that form from the centrioles and attach to the centromere of each chromosome.
Astral rays, also called asters, are similar to spindle fibers. However, they are different because spindle fibers attach to the KINETOCHORE of the chromosomes, pulling them apart during Anaphase stage, while Asters are attached to centrosomes and the cytoplasm which pull apart the cytoplasm for division.

An aster is a cellular structure shaped like a star, formed around each centrosome during mitosis in an animal cell. [1] Astral rays, composed of microtubules, radiate from the centrosphere and look like a cloud. It is one of the variants of microtubules like kinetochore- and interpolar microtubules.
