An axon, or nerve fiber, is a long slender projection of a nerve cell, or neuron, that conducts electrical impulses away from the neuron's cell body or soma.

Axo-axonal connections are from one axon to another. Most often they are at the terminal button at the end of the axon. Even if an action potential has fired, axo-axonal synapses allow for modulation of this signal's strength.

The electrical impulse mostly arrives on the dendrites, gets processed into the cell body to then move along theaxon.On its all length an axonfunctions merely as an electric cable, simply transmitting the signal.
