bases are compound which react with acids to give salt and water only. they are oxides or hydroxides of metals.
bases can be either soluble or insoluble in aqueous solution.
bases which are soluble in water are called alkalies.
they turn red lithmus blue
eg -
soluble base = NaOH
insoluble base = ZnO
