What are bases ? How does a base like sodium hydroxide react with zinc ?

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a strong alkali. Its pH is much higher than 7. So, it turns red litmus to blue. NaOH reacts with zinc to form sodium zincate and hydrogen.

A base is a substance which dissociates to give hydroxide (OH-) Ions in water.
EX:- Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH).
Base have bitter in taste, soapy in feel and turn red litmus solution blue.
