it is also known as is a structure projecting outward from the curtain wall of a fortification, most commonly angular in shape and positioned at the corners. The fully developed bastion consists of two faces and two flanks with fire from the flanks being able to protect the curtain wall and also the adjacent bastions.

projecting part of a fortification built at an angle to the line of a wall, so as to allow defensive fire in several directions.

bastions were made  in  the  fort wall to  see  at  distance and attack  on enemies  coming towards  the  fort  from  several  directions.
