The benefit of western disturbances in Punjab is that the rainfall which is brought on by the western disturbances during the winter season is beneficial for the production of rabi crops as Punjab is one of the major producers of rabi crops in India.

• A western disturbance is an extra-tropical storm that originates in the Mediterranean Sea and then comes to India. It is more frequent and strong in the winter season. They are the cause of sudden winter rain in states like Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

• Precipitation during the winter season has great importance in agriculture; particularly for the rabi crops i.e., this is important for the growth of rabi crops in the country. The rabi crops found in India are wheat, barley, mustard, sesame, etc. Among them, wheat is the most important crop, that helps to meet India’s food security.
