* Biodiversity hotspots are regions with high levels of species richness and high degree of endemism. Hotspots cover less than 2% of the earth's land area.

Forests are called biodiversity hotspot because they are the areas with many different type of species that r under threat from human activity. Forests serves as a reservoir of biodiversity.

There r two basic approaches for conservation of biodiversity :

1. 'in situ' conservation (on-site conservation)

2. 'ex situ' conservation (off-site conservation)

In situ conservation helps in recovering population in the surroundings where they have developed their distinctive features.

Ex- national parks, biosphere reserves

Ex situ conservation is conservation of selected rare plants and animals in places outside their natural habitat. It helps in recovering population or preventing their extinction under conditions that closely resemble their natural habitats.

Ex- botanical garden, zoological parks.
