Abiotic factors are the non-living parts of an environment. These include things such as sunlight, temperature, wind, water, soil and naturally occurring events such as storms, fires and volcanic eruptions.

Biotic factors are the living parts of an environment, such as plants, animals and micro-organisms. Together, they are the biological factors that determine a species' success. Each of these factors impacts others, and a mix of both is necessary for an ecosystem to survive.

The lithosphere is the solid, outer part of the Earth. The lithosphere includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust, the outermost layers of Earth’s structure. It is bounded by the atmosphere above and the athenosphere (another part of the upper mantle) below.
