Bones are the rigid and hard calcified tissue organs that form the skeleton.

Bones are collagen rich hard connective tissues that form the skeleton of vertebrates. Bones collagen matrix of bones are enriched with minerals such as calcium and phosphorous.

There are 6 types of bones that form part of the skeletal system, namely:

1) Long bones - these are bones that are longer than they are wide. They have two main parts; the shaft and the endings. Example of long bones include the femur and humerus.

2) Short bones - these are bones that have almost similar length, width and depth. They are somewhat cubical. Examples of short bones include carpal and tarsal bones.

3) Flat bones - these are bones that have a thin and sheet like shape. Examples of flat bones include the cranial bones and the scapulae.

4) Sutural bones - these are bones that are found within the sutural joints of the cranial bones

5) Sesamoid bones - these bones develop in regions of stress and friction within tendons.

6) Irregular bones - these are non-uniform and shapeless bones. Examples include the bones of the vertebral column.
