By-elections - Elections held to fill a vacancy caused by either death, resignation or any other reason. In this case fresh elections are held in that particular constituency alone.

Mid-term elections- Elections held before the expiry of Lok Sabha’s full term. Mid-term elections can also be held for Vidhan Sabha. These Elections are held to form a new House. For example, 1980 the Lok Sabha election at the ' fall of the Janata Government.

Mid-term - Mid-term elections are held much before the schedule period of five years. The president can dissolve the Lok Sabha before the completion of it's term of five years, and order fresh elections to constitute a new House.
