Oxidation Reaction

The reaction in which oxygen is gained is called oxidation reaction. We can call a reaction oxidation reaction if hydrogen atom or an electron gets reduced too. Example of such reactions are given below:

2Cu + O₂ ⇒ 2CuO

Reduction Reaction

This reaction is the oppsite of the oxidation reaction. The reaction in which oxygen gets reduced is called reduction reaction. We can call a reaction reduction reaction if hydrogen atom is gained or an electron is gained too. Example of this reaction is:

Fe⁺² + e ⇒ Fe⁺³

Oxidation-Reduction Reaction (Redox)

The reaction in which both oxidation and reduction happens is called oxidation reduction. In this reaction, an oxygen atom might get reduced while a hydrogen atom gets reduced as weel meaning that both reduction and oxidisation occurs. Example is:

CuO + H₂ ⇒ Cu + H₂O
