What are canal colonies?Why and were they set up?

The British Indian Government installed canals in some parts of the country to irrigate the desert-like lands to grow wheat and cotton for export. This was done in Punjab. As the area was irrigated, peasants came and settled and formed a colony, that is called the Canal Colony.
